The Challenge
Water pollution and environmental degradation
The ecosystem had been negatively impacted by previous gold exploitation.
Destroyed and destitute land previously exploited with old mining techniques
The region had suffered from environmental destruction resulting from old mining techniques used in the 1950s.
Mercury pollution
Inefficiencies in old mining techniques led to soil removal and created destitute areas with numerous contaminants including mercury.
Wildlife challenges
Wildlife inhabiting the ecosystem suffered from devastating conditions resulting from the mercury pollution of the water.
Strategic Intervention
An agreement with government and environmental agencies to recover gold while removing mercury from the ecosystem.
Set out to remove the mercury in the exploited areas.
The team were able to recover up to 60% of the original gold in the area.
Replaced soil and planted trees in the reclaimed areas.
The Outcomes
Improved quality of all life within the communities
Because of the team's intervention, land and water pollution decreased while sustainable developments increased.
Lower pollution levels
Successfully removed mercury pollutants from the land over the course of 9 years.
Economic incentives
By recovering gold from remains in the region, the team was able to establish an economic incentive that enabled collaboration with government entities.
Healthier ecosystem
By removing mercury, placing soil and planting trees, the health of the ecosystem improved for decades to come.
